The early morning mist lies on the artemisia steppe in Northern Kazakhstan. This is the landscape around Botai, an Eneolithic (circa 3500 BC) archaeological site. Millions of horse bones and teeth have been recovered from this site. I worked on the excavation and studied a sample of the horse remains. It is most likely that they were killed in the hunt.
