The Yellow River flows west-east through Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province. Situated between Xian and Dunhuang, Lanzhou was an important hub on the Silk Road. Today it is an industrial centre, polluted and shabby, overlooked by mountains to the north and south. Nevertheless, the city is lively and full of character.
