Ferry on the Liujiaxia Reservoir (Yongjing, Gansu)
Ref: 070624-1606 Date: 24-06-2007
Ferries are an important form of transport on the Liujiaxia Reservoir. The reservoir was built on the Yellow River for power generation, flood control, irrigation etc. Its construction resulted in the displacement of many local people. There were also serious implications for the natural environment, including increased erosion and heightened risk of landslides. Terracing and planting trees and other vegetation stabilises the hill faces and permits crop cultivation almost to the water's edge.
