A view of the West White Poplar Gully landscape. The mountain side is clothed in conifers and the meadows are grazed short by livestock. The Southern Pastures are the summer grazing grounds of Kazakh herds. The livestock - sheep, goats, cattle, horses and perhaps a few bactrian camels - spend the summer in the mountains. Tourism - including pony rides - brings much needed funds to the herders' household economy.
