Erosion defenses on the beach at Cape Canaveral (Florida)
Ref: 060915-1872 Date: 15-09-2006
The beach between Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach is vulnerable to the forces of wind and wave erosion. Attempts to mitigate these forces are neverending. In this photo we can see the remains of a line of almost totally rotten timber piles driven into the sand at a right angle to the breaking waves. The jetty and rock groyne in the background. are also used to break the power of the waves. The native vegetation in the foreground serves to stabilise the sand.
