Gaochang ancient city (Turfan Basin, Xinjiang)

Gaochang ancient city is located at base of, and south of, the Flaming Mountains (Turfan basin, Xinjiang). It was occupied from the Western Han dynasty to the Ming dynasty (2nd century BC - 15th century AD). Throughout much of its history it was one of the most important cities on the Silk Road. The remains of a rammed earth building are in the foreground of the photo. Behind it are the Flaming Mountains. And behind that, the snow-capped Bogda Shan range (a branch of the Tien Shan).
