Gaochang ancient city is located at base of, and south of, the Flaming Mountains (Turfan basin, Xinjiang). Gaochang was occupied from the Western Han dynasty to the Ming dynasty (circa 2nd century BC - 15th century AD). Throughout much of its history it was one of the most important cities on the Silk Road. The remains of a rammed earth wall are in the foreground of the photo. Behind it are the pinkish Flaming Mountains. And behind that, the snow-capped Bogda Shan range (a branch of the Tien Shan).
